Punisher: War Zone

Today I start off my day reviewing "The Punisher". Now just so we're all on the same page here, I'm not talking about that train wreck of a movie in 2004 starring Thomas Jane and John Travolta {But now that I think about it, it is pretty funny to pretend the Punisher is going around killing Scientologist, I mean come on, really someone should.} The one from 1989 starring Dolph Lundgren was bad, but to be fair rumors has it that originally the movie wasn't even a Punisher movie, but a different movie entirely.{The Russain dude from Rocky 4, duuuuh}. Personally, I have no qualms issues and/or any objections in believing the creditability of this rumor, I mean really just watch it. Seriously, I can totally believe the producers just slap a Punisher sticker on it and hoped to market it better, it's not like that sort of thing is uncommon in Hollywood. "Double Impact" with Van Damme could have easily been a "Double Dragon" movie and know one would've been the wiser.{In fact it would've been better then that Double Dragon movie we did get with Marc Dacascos} Now I'm sure if the 1989 Punisher was called Naked Sewer Cop, it would be just another lost bastard Dolph Lundgen 80's movie sitting next to Showdown in Little Tokyo, Universal Solider and He-Man in a $1 Store bargain bin. As a child of 80's I thought Dolph Lundgren was pretty cool

Anyway, I watched "Punisher: War Zone" and at first I really didn't know what to expect out of this. After the disappointment from the other two predecessors I went in thinking I was going to lose another hour and a half of my life. When I first saw the Punisher bust into a room and whack and F--k ton of mobsters I was thinking, "Wow, the deaths are pretty over exaggerated comical, much like Toxic Avenger" but as I kept watching I realized it's sort of matches the comicbook style of vengeful vigilante Punisher style justice fans like myself of the comic has grown to love.  If you've read the relaunch of the Punisher comics in 2000 with The Russian, you know what I mean.

I think the problem the other Punisher movies had was they tried to be too realistic. The fun part about reading Punisher comics I think is how wacky the deaths are, and what most people I feel forgot is that the deaths in the comic are just done that way. Frank Castle comes up with with creative ways to kill bad guys, some are ironic, funny, very bizarre, unrealistic accidental, overly gruesome and gore-some, but you know what? He sort reminds me of Deadpool, if Deadpool didn't f--k around with his very funny quips. Speaking of humor, the small irony of the is the Punisher has no sense of humor, so the writers have to use the situations as the comic relief, that's why I read the Punisher and enjoy the comics very much so. To me a 100% serious comic can be sort boring after you read a couple of issues; which is why it sort of faded away a little in my opinion in the mid 90's.

In the end I found myself watching a living Punisher comicbook. Now don't get me wrong there were parts in the movie where even I had to say WTF is this crap?! But to say it's a bad movie in the same category as the other two isn't right. It's either you like it or you don't. Would I've been piss if I paid $10 in a theater to watch it?...perhaps. Would I enjoyed it on DVD on a Friday night with pizza, friends and beer?...Hell, Yes!

So if you're a fan of the comic, you should really check it out for yourself; but if you're just a regular action movie dude that's use to a typical modern action movie plot devices you may be sort of disappointed.

Well that's my two cents for the day...
